Nicola Rosa is the Global Head of Immersive Learning at Accenture. Nicola is currently part of the Accenture Digital UKI, where he is the Go-To Market Lead for XR (AR, VR, and MR). We discussed the growth of gaming brands during the pandemic, and the sense of immersion that technology brings to experiences. 

We explore the role of digital twins and how it will impact all areas of immersive tech, from manufacturing to retail. We also lightly touch on the topic of devices reading our minds, as well as the progression of the tech over the next decade.

My name is Nick Rosa and I work for Accenture. I’m leading the business for extended reality in Europe, and I’m also leading the offering for everything that is between immersive learning.

Will the way we communicate unify in the future?

I believe that this is going to probably bring to a unified standard in the future for audio-visual communications between people as we have right now with normal mobile networks. People with the Facebook portal cannot talk with people that have Google Hangouts or Skype, or Slack or Microsoft Teams and vice versa. So there’s a huge lack of interoperability and there’s a fragmentation of standards for communication, which I believe it’s something that is going to be tackled, probably in a very immediate future in order to avoid the online that people are getting into law. So this need of expressing and communicating what you have inside with people and eventually interacting with the community is on the rise and truly shows that the digital first is becoming more of a necessity than a commodity as it was before.

It is going to impact massively the way that businesses are going to use digital communication and digital businesses, such as augmented reality shopping in the future. And it is going to be persistent even after the end of the Coronavirus lockdown. So companies will look more and more in ways to reach consumers and users just using digital channels rather than the normal physical retail.

How can digital twins be used?

You can optimize the use of those kinds of digital twins for something like not only the design of the product itself, but also for upskilling the workforce that is going to build the product. Then, when the workforce is upskilled enough to build this product, you can use the same 3D images to allow them to build the product faster using augmented reality through connected worker experience, like Microsoft HoloLens, or monitor our devices like we aware and so on. And then when you sell the product when you want to sell the product, you can use exactly the same images and renderings in order to create a virtual catalog of the product itself. This helps with augmented shopping.

Which ties into what Google is doing with augmented reality?

Correct. Once you have the product sold, what you can do is to provide interactive digital manuals for people that are absolutely foolproof. So you can provide information on how to, for example, install a router, a broadband router, directly overlaying all the information where you have to put the cable where you have to put the power plug how which kind of button you have to press directly on top of the router itself. So there is a series of services that can be provided to the consumers, but also to the enterprise that all rely on the same assets.

So that’s why the digital asset pipeline optimization that relates directly to what we were talking about before the digital twin will become more and more important in the future of any kind of company. We’re not just talking about manufacturing or retail.

Will VR devices read our minds?

I don’t believe that Mark Zuckerberg has been announced neural machines are face by TPU. So what Elon Musk is doing with neural link is quite remarkable. And I’m not saying that this is going to happen soon, especially because there’s also a perception of this technology that needs to change. I believe that when the first people that will start having those implants are going to interact with other people, the global community will realize that those people are super humans, and will want to have those same the same superpower the same way that we, we felt, oh my god, I don’t want to miss out with my Tinder, with my Uber ,or with my Citymapper. I need to have that smartphone.

People will want to have the same kind of superpowers that this kind of technology will provide when it’s going to be available to the masses safe and will provide the same kind of user experience transformational user experience we were talking about before for people. But we are not talking about probably five years, more like 15 to 20 years from now.
